Freight Brokers Need it! We've GOT IT for less!

Attn: Freight Brokers, Here's One to Grow On!

Image What is the best insurance  policy you can obtain for your freight brokerage?. A THOROUGH motor carrier compliance department! Sure a good contingent cargo policy provides protection and will surely ease the minds of many shippers, but knowing that your motor carriers are adequately insuring the goods can help ward off the evils of a possibly unfavorable claim. Our tip today asks you to pay special attention to the Carrier's certificate of insurance.

Imagine this scenario:

*You are brokering a load of refrigerated freight.
* You obtain a certificate of insurance (hopefully from the Carrier's insurance agent, who normally has an Errors & Omissions insurance policy to insure the accuracy of coverage they are stating the Motor Carrier has in place.)
*You check the Company name, policy number, effective and expiration dates, and the limit of coverage.
*Everything looks good. The carrier has a $100,000 cargo policy with a reputable insurance company.
*You broker the load. Quickly, I might add, because this is how you earn your living. On to the next load.
*A claim is reported by the Motor Carrier (or consignee, ect), it seems that the load has spoiled due to a malfunction with the Carrier's refrigeration unit.
* The claim is submitted to the Carrier's insurance company.
*The insurance company DENIES the claim.
*Why, you ask.
** In today's insurance climate, the terms General Freight, or FAK (Freight of All Kinds) are no longer accepted as the sole commodity the Carrier is hauling. The insurance agents are supposed to ask the Carrier to be specific in what they haul. The reason for this is because the insurance companies do not necessarily want to insure all types of goods. Also, they typically have different rate tiers for the commodities they will insure. In this case, the Carrier should have had a REFRIGERATION BREAKDOWN coverage endorsed to their cargo policy. THIS IS NORMALLY REPRESENTED ON THE CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE AS FOLLOWS:

Name of Insurance Company, Policy Number, Effective Date, Expiration Date, Limit of Coverage, Deductible(Normally $1,000) AND A $2,500 REEFER B/D DEDUCTIBLE. If this REEFER B/D(or BREAKDOWN) deductible is not shown on the certificate, ASSUME THE MOTOR CARRIER DOES NOT HAVE COVERAGE FOR THIS. Demand another certificate showing this coverage. It could be worth $100,000 to you.
